Vintage National Tailoring Co. Metal Display Shelf, Advertising, c. 1890-1920
Vintage National Tailoring Co. Metal Display Shelf/Rack, Advertising Piece, c. 1890-1920s This metal display shelf/rack has the following words stenciled in gold letters at the bottom front: “National Tailoring Co., Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco”. The close-up photo I have included shows the letters as doubled (gold shadow) which they are not; in trying to take the photo, the camera moved slightly, creating that effect. The rack is a rich dark brown color; it stands 19″ tall by about 10″ wide by a little over 10″ deep (from the front to the wall). You can notice from the photos that the unit is not closed in at the back so the shelves are exposed in the back. The fact that there is no back would enable you to store something inside the unit on the bottom (under the top two shelves) which would then be virtually hidden since it would be out of sight. Whatever you would place inside from the back would need to be placed more toward the back since there is an opening at the bottom front as you can see from the photo. This shelf unit has been in one nonsmoking household for the past 25 years and is in original condition. This condition is such that it is showing its age; there are multiple signs of use including the following: multiple dents, bends and dings; a bend in the metal at the very top (measuring about two and a half inches by three quarters of an inch): a bend on the right side at the bottom toward the back; several brown paint drips in the front; multiple scratches in the surface; and the dirt and dust of the ages. The good news is that the lettering is still there and the finish is original with no replacement/touchup. Original display shelves from stores seem to be harder and harder to find especially in original condition. Not only are the shelves a part of history, they also are utilitarian and can serve nicely to store/display paper or small books or pamphlets. If you love history and need space to store display items, this shelf unit is for you. I welcome any questions that you may have.
